NOAA Executives Participate in a DC EnvironMentors Field Trip

October 13, 2011

On September 27th, DC EnvironMentors joined a group of 13 NOAA Executives on a field experience at the Smithsonian EnvironMentors Research Center. DC EnvironMentors students from Thurgood Marshall and School Without Walls partnered with NOAA executives and administrators from various areas including the National Weather Center, Center for Satellite Application, and Deputy Under Secretary of NOAA, Mary Glackin.

DC EnvironMentors students and the NOAA executives were organized into groups to explore and report their findings from four field experiences. Some groups conducted a health assessment of the Rhodes River by beach seining, identifying and analyzing the fish and macro-invertebrates they caught. In addition, students learned the different types of earth worms including their role in assessing forest health. Aboard a NOAA research vessel, students and executives did a trawl of the Rhodes River to identify fish species, conduct water quality tests, and learn sonar technology role in research. While canoeing a muddy creek, students learned about submerged aquatic vegetation, water quality testing, and creek health assessment.
