Intership Opportunities

UNIVERSITY AFFILIATE PROGRAM - INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

NCSE offers paid internships for students and recent graduates of Affiliate schools during the academic year and summer. Interns receive practical experience in science and environmental policy, media communications, outreach to constituent communities and web-based information systems. Interns attend briefings, seminars and conferences, and interact with Congress, federal agencies, and scientific and environmental organizations.

Internships last 3 months and are occassionally extended to 6 months. Internships carry a stipend of $1,400/month except for interns on "Semester in Washington" programs who receive academic credit. Descriptions of the duties and responsibilities as well as general requirements and rewards follow below. Please find application instructions at the bottom of the page. We look forward to hearing from students and recent graduates from Affiliate Institutions.  

All interns will gain a diverse experience during their tenure at NCSE, engaging in a variety of substantive activities, while also contributing to general office tasks. Interns will find opportunities to attend briefings, seminars and conferences, as well as to make important contacts.

General Requirements: 

  • Excellent communication and writing skills                             
  • Education or experience in environmental science or policy (preferably both)                             
  • Well-organized                           
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently                           
  • Basic computer skills                           
  • Curious mind and a desire to learn                              
  • Flexible                             
  • Sense of humor

Duties and Responsibilities: 
Interns will have the unique opportunity to be involved in a number of programs and projects at NCSE. Interns may assist in outreach to the academic, governmental, business, and civil society communities. Interns are encouraged to attend events and meetings in DC and on Capitol Hill. 

Responsibilities may include planning for NCSE's National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment, working with the  Council of Environmental Deans and Directors (CEDD) or National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry (NCSSF), and helping with the Earth Portal.  Additionally, interns may work on web site design, web page development, electronic outreach (listserv, etc.), database management, LAN support, and web research and content evaluation.  Strong candidates will be particularly interested in working on fundraising and development issues.

Duration:
Internships usually last for 3 months with an opportunity for extension and promotion.
40 hours per week; Monday – Friday.
